Running a business from home: Creating space

More people than ever are working from home but it can be a real challenge to do Zoom calls with a backdrop of dirty dishes or to try to write reports squeezed in between a forgotten jigsaw puzzle and someone’s half-eaten lunch.

Having a dedicated space to work from has all sorts of practical and psychological benefits but if, like most of us, you feel like you filled your home to capacity within a week of walking through the door, it can seem like a difficult thing to achieve. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to create space – that don’t include trying to sell your children on an internet auction site!

Declutter your home

It is amazing how much space you can find simply by getting rid of things that you don’t really need. Your spare room may make a fantastic home office and is actually only filled with clothes you haven’t been able to fit into in a decade and exercise equipment that has only ever been used to dry the clothes that you do wear. There are also lots of psychological benefits to decluttering and working in a clear space, as described on by Psychology Today.

Even the process of decluttering can be cathartic and can really start to focus your mind on the business at hand and the outcomes you want to achieve. Having a dedicated business space can repay any investments that you make by allowing you to concentrate fully and be as productive as you can be.

Put things into storage

If you’re not sure how long you will be running your business or working from home then putting items in storage can be a great option. A Safestore lockup, for example, could free up space immediately, whilst removing the need for you to get rid of things you may need one day.

You may decide to use the likes of Safestore as a long-term solution to allow you to turn your garage into a home office or as a way of giving you time to see how things pan out. You may find that your business takes off and you need to move to bigger premises one day. A storage solution can ensure that if this happens, you don’t end up regretting the items you thought you had to get rid of to make space in those early days.

Sell what you don’t need

You might not really want to sell your children but you can sell other things that you don’t want or need. This can be a fantastic way of making space for your new work area, whilst also raising valuable funds. You won’t feel guilty about spending money on a great work chair if you have made cash through selling other things.
